Why is everybody so calm about the Dometic frig recall am I missing something? I think having to wait until some time in April to be safe again is a little ridiculous. We are planning to go to the FMCA Perry GA. and will be running on gas for six days. Is it safe? Not according to Dometic!

Dometic

How are all you full timers handling it? What do you do when boondocking?
I' am I over reacting?

I am not so happy, but what is the alternative?

I am stationary until May, and I am wondering if the April date is a good one.

I suspect that "The Movement" will start soon, and then there will be a hair in the butter.

RVers are a pretty proactive group.

Jimbo, I think that the risk of driving on the highways today are riskier than the Dometic issue right now. As the cooling units age the chances they will rupture will increase. If you could borrow or even rent a small 1000 watt generator for the rally you could plug the refrigerator into it and not worry about a fire. I hope no one has a problem and that Dometic corrects all the units in question quickly. Good luck and take care.

I was on the Norcold a few years back now the Dometic. I'll have to say the Norcold did right the way they exchanged the whole unit.

The Dometic "fix" really isn't a fix at all.

As I understand it, Dometic is designing a protective tube to go around the outside of the burner tube. This will NOT prevent fires. Is is hoped that this will contain any fire from spreading.

I have an 8 year old Dometic that is part of the recall. In November we traveled from Florida to California with the Dometic on Gas all the way. In March we head from CA to NY. If I had no knowledge of the recall (and I submit that very few do) I'd run all the way on gas. Now, I'm considering running my generator all the way.

I believe that Dometic is practicing CYA procedures. We should NOT panic. Rather make a simple daily inspection of the burner tube while you're on the road. See a problem starting? - shut off the gas and stay on electric.

By the way, if you travel up to 6 hours a day and keep the frig OFF during that time your stuff will remain cold. In fact the more cold food/drink in the fridge the better.
