The return spring is malfunctioning. Either the pin broke, which keeps the spring from unwinding, or the spring itself broke. Can you manually wind it in, and secure it with a strap?. Then take it to a service center. Fixing it yourself can be tricky.

Hi hnipper,
The awning is spring loaded to the open position. The motor is required to close the awning. The closing action winds the spring. Go to Door Awning Clutch - iRV2.com RV Photo Gallery to see the part you'll need. Depending on your mobility and handyman skills, replacing the part is not rocket science. It just takes patience and time.

I just had mine replaced under an extended warranty. The RV Repair Shop said they replace a few of them every year. The part was close to $170 with shipping, and they charged 4 hours for labor, 2 to get the awning off and apart, and 2 to put it back together. Since I have a $100 deductable, I had the repair shop do it, now if I were paying for the whole thing, I would do it myself.

If it shot out on its on sorry to tell you that you need a new motor assy. Samething happen to me going down the freeway it's not a hard fix. Mine is a carefree they change the gear on the end which is probably what broke its better now. Maybe 2 hrs labor at best 30 minutes off and 1 to 11/2 to put back and adjust.
