A transfer switch is required by the National Electric Code for any connection of power to a home. This is required in all states.

Ok... Good to know. Thanks.

I guess then the many available from panel manufacturers and third party companies cannot be used anywhere in the USA, correct?

And when utility power fails when the RV's not home? What then?

They may be used to lockout the power when doing maintenance of additions.

Lock & Tag for SAFETY

But not for isolating a generator.

Yeah, the "sour milk", along with potentially hundreds of dollars of the other stuff that spoiled, that you obviously are choosing to ignore to minimize the issue, assuming the usual way that I and most other people normally use refrigerators and freezers.

Look - risk aversion is personal; there's no "right or wrong". And, at the end of the day, each of us has our own priorities - it's your money, and your food.

I'm out of here - this is to the point of flogging a dead horse.

I think this is what vsheetz is referring to for the manual transfer. Perfectly legal. Click image for larger version

Exactly! My dryer is a 240 volt unit so I have to be on 50 amp shore power or run the generator.

Not here, power company requires automatic ones.

That why I originally commented 'most places' allow, not 'all' allow. Can vary by local authority.

Indiana requires a disconnect switch at minimum, according to REMC and Duke Energy.

The manual transfer switch in mhudson's post is perfectly legal according to the National Electric Code. No requirement that it be 'automatic' per NEC. It is a failsafe solution.
