Electrical problem - coach batt. not charging
Hi all,
Could use some help here. Jayco Class C, Ford E450 chassis. Coach battery isn't getting charged when on shore power. Also, when on shore power, the basement light in the utility center and the dash radio aren't getting much power (light is barely glowing). Turning on the red "battery" switch by the coach door makes the LP detector whine - not enough power, evidently. BUT, interior 12v lights work fine on shore power. So the shore power is getting through the converter - just not to all of the 12v side. I have a Jayco schematic, but I'm not convinced it's identical to how my rig is wired.
Any troubleshooting ideas welcome!
I will continue to work on it and post updates if any.
Thanks!

Addendum: the more I look at it, the more I'm wondering if it's the relay in the fuse panel in the utility center...

Do you have an echo charger? Not all rigs will charge chassis batteries when on shore power unless something like an echo charger has been installed.

Hi Steverino,
This solution is very specific to Jayco and how it was built. Consider making your question in the Jayco Owners forum here on iRV2. You could also ask a moderator to move this thread to the Jayco Owners forum.

Check battery voltage, it might have a dead cell. Also, all connections, especially to ground should be removed, cleaned and replaced. When on shore power, do you have the 'salesman switch' battery cut off on or off? It should always be on except when in storage off shore power.

Thanks for the replies.
- yes, I have a Trik-L-Start to charge the engine battery when connected to shore. I just installed it last week, and am beginning to wonder if it was somehow part of the problem
- yes, the "salesman switch" or coach battery switch is on.
- the coach (house) battery is not new and could possibly be faulty, but that's not the root issue - the first problem is that I wasn't getting a charging voltage from the converter to the house battery to begin with.
- I bench tested the relay and it seems to be okay.
I ended up fully disconnecting the Trik-L-Start, and things seemed to return to normal. I then reconnected it as a test, but the odd thing is that things didn't go south again.
More research needed...I hate it when I don't understand stuff.
(BTW, Gary, your point is well taken - I had debated where to post & opted for "general" thinking maybe I'd get some broader ideas.)
Thanks again...
