Why would the engine continue to run after turning key off and removing from the ignition? After turning key on/off 3 or 4 times it finally stopped.

Sounds like fuel shutoff valve sticking open. Next time it stays running with the key out, step on the acelerator and if if don't rev up, you have your answer. If it does, could be ign switch.

A 2007 vintage Cummins ISB doesn't have a fuel shutoff solenoid such as the old mechanical 12 valve 5.9L B-series Cummins used. It uses a high pressure common rail injection system with electronic injectors that are controlled by an engine control module (ECM). Somehow, the ECM isn't getting the signal to shut off the engine - I'd bet on a bad ignition switch or ignition relay that finally breaks contact after cycling the key 3-4 times as the original poster stated.

highly unlikely that someone else would have this problem but the breakaway battery on my trailer was keeping voltage on the computers when the key was off. I had to add a big diode.

Thanks for the replies. Wouldn't be surprised if the problem will be with my ignition switch wiring. Just remembered that when I was in Fl this past winter an electronic shop installed a CB and antenna. If I recall correctly they said they got the power for the CB from the ignition switch wires. Hopefully this problem is a loose connection and easily accessable.

Couple of questions if this happens again before I get it fixed, (1) how do I get the engine to shut off and (2) would the problem cause the engine to shut off while I'm driving?

It sounds like the contacts (whether it be in the ignition switch or ignition relay) are sticking closed, probably because they're burned or pitted. This shouldn't result in failure while the engine is running.

If your ignition relay is a small cube-shaped unit that plugs into a power distribution center, you can unplug the relay to shut off the engine, regardless of whether the problem is in the relay or the ignition switch.

My easy answer is the ignition switch is bad. When we bought our houseboat there were no keys for the ignition switches on the flybridge so I installed new ones. The bridge and switches are covered, but even so the first rainstorm after the install caused the starboard engine to start itself up in the middle of the night. We thought someone was stealing the boat with us in it! The very next night the port engine did the same thing. All because of moisture. Over the years just about half of everything I've owned with an ignition switch needed a new one at some point. They actually do a lot of work and if moisture doesn't get 'em, the heat they deal with can...

Yes, it is the small cube type. Earlier today I picked one up at NAPA. If that's the problem, I'll have one. If not, it's something to carry as a spare.

I hope the engine doesn't start like your boat. I don't need the airbags starting to fill up.

It happened again when leaving the campground.

My procedure for leaving is to start the engine to airup the bags and raise the levelers, then shut off engine to bring slides in. Started fine but when I turned off the key it kept running. I thought I'd found the only ignition relay and pulled it. Engine kept running but instrument cluster turned off. Discovered there are 4 or 5 other relays that also say ignition. Didn't pull any of those but I did turn both battery cuttoff switches to the off position which shut the engine down. Turned them back on, brought slides in, started the engine and drove home.

At home, I turned the key off expecting the same thing to happen but the engine immediately shut off. Does this point to a relay problem issue more so than a switch problem?

What type of coach do you have? Did you have a trailer connected, the reason I ask is a few monaco coaches were misswired so if you had a trailer with a battery connected it would backfeed into the ignition ciurcut causing the coach to stay running while connected to the tow trailer with the key off.

I got a 1993 pace arrow 33' also my engine don't shut off with ignition turn off and key out but only fix i know is keep dash unscrewed so i see like 5 clusters of wires the one attached close to head lights i move slowly and that cuts the engine i only had this pop up last month cause my instrument cluster was dim( very hard to see in night)- thank the wife) so I bought new dimmer switch however not a 1993 version but a earlier yr i think 1985 not quite sure but it was exact same as old one so anyhow instrument cluster still dim but to shut down engine i lift dash wiggle wire then prestro it stops ( oct i will send it do a cemi dealership in edmonton to get a quote) also my marker light don't work ever :(
