Over the years we've gotten service policies on three vehicles, never used any of them. Luckily the first one we got all our money back on. If it wasn't used and you applied withing 30 days of returning the vehicle (leased) you got all your money back. Dealer was surprised as no one had ever done it before! The other two were simply wasted money, never used and no return for not using it. Just didn't have anything go wrong that was covered (I read the contract so I wasn't disappointed by trying to file a claim for something not covered). Those two were some $4,000 that I could have used elsewhere.

We're doing the same as Paul - almost the same amount. Just put new shoes on the read (4 of them), decided to do it in Oregon to save the sales tax, but the money was there in the account waiting for us to use it.

We elected to self-insure mainly because the coach was new (a year old, but a dealer leftover), had a full 1 yr manufacturer warranty and a few more years of warranty on the chassis and engine from those manufacturers.

So far, it has worked out for us. We've been able to either take care of assorted things ourselves, or find help at a price much less than the typical $100-$130 labor rate the dealers charge. We've had only one major problem, but with the help of the good folks here at IRV2, quickly and inexpensively resolved it. The power of the knowlege of others!

We'd have given a lot more consideration to an extended warranty had we bought a "pre-loved" coach, since there's no way to really tell how aggressively it might have been loved.
