You mentioned you have a Progressive Dynamics 9100. I assume it is a converter and also assume it is rated for 45 amp output. If the converter supplies its maximum output to the batteries 24/7 for 30 days, it will contribute 389 kw/h to your friends electric bill for the month. If your Kw/h rate is $0.14 then all you owe to your friend is $54.50. If your converter is rated for 65 amps then you will owe you friend $78.65. Ask your friend how many Kilowatt hours he was charged during that billing period. Even if you had a couple of electric heaters running 24/7 during that period your contribution to the bill would be $302.40.

How about the inverse logic?

Given a $1200 bill and assuming 0.14 per KW hour would mean approximately 8570 KW were used. Assuming uniform usage for the entire period this is about 72 KW per day or 3KW per hour. THen assuming a nominal 120VAC and very simple calculations (no phase shifts ect) this is a current draw of approximately 25AMPS.

The battery failure didn't occur on day one so a much larger draw is required to get to the 25 amp average.

On a side note, wHen my XANTREX is charging at its maximum of 75 amps (indicated) DC the AC consumption is around 12AMPs. Assuming a worst case of 120 days continuously and 0.14 per KW this would be about $580.

Coverter specs - Input: 105-130 VAC 60 Hz
500 Watts
Output: 13.6 VDC, 30 Amps

2 Interstate Marine Batteries with 750 CCA and 88 AMP (reserve?)

Electric cost 6 1/2 cents kwh

The converter specs give you the answer: 0.500 kw x 24 hours x 30 days x $0.065 = $23.40 for a month at max output. Nowhere near $1200.
