Fiberglass patch kit removal?
My brother-in-law borrowed my RV for the weekend and it got returned with a inch and a half hole through the wall and a poorly applied fiberglass patch kit. Any idea how I can remove his awesome body work so I can start over fresh?
Would a heat gun soften the resin enough to peal it off or am I stuck sanding the entire 8x8ish section...

Sounds like the brother-in-law needs it professionally fixed for you.

Call me a curmudgeon of an old man, but....
This represents the prime example as to why we never let anyone, not even family, borrow our RV. And yes, they have asked. Not gonna happen.

You got that right. If it was my brother-in-law he would have already taken it to the body shop for the repair at his cost. One thing for sure he'd never get his mitts on it ever again.
You might get lucky and get it off. Don't look like any sanding was done before he goobered that mess on there. Try to get a putty knife started under one edge of it. A heat gun will just make matters worse. You might try and spray some carb cleaner at the top edge of it before you try the putty knife.

No!!! The picture makes it clearly obvious there was ZERO prep done before the 'patch' was applied.
With a little bit of solvent and / or heat it should be pretty easy to merely peel it off.

If he didn't sand and prep the surface, it may not have bonded very well.
Very, very carefully see if you can get a putty knife between the fiberglass cloth and the original surface and gently pry. If the bond is poor, the new fiberglass should start to pop off with minimal new damage. Take your time, and don't pry to hard or you'll pull the gellcoat and underlying structure apart.
If this fails, the only other method is sanding. Do not use heat. the amount of heat required to get it to come off will damage the gellcoat and the underlying structure.
Send your brother in law to this site. It will show how to do proper fiberglass work. I built an entire airplane out of the stuff.

Hi ! Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined the gang!
WOW! Nobody needs a BIL like that! Don't know what the best solution would be. I would take it to a local body shop.
Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

Wow, what a great job! If he had any brains (obviously not, but...) he could have simply put duct tape on it for the weekend so that it could be fixed correctly. 2 questions: Did he say HOW he punched a hole in your RV, and WHY he thought that he was doing you a favor with his BS repair (I shudder to think what his own vehicles/house look like)?
