Folding step well cover

I have a 2006 Seabreeze it came with a drop in step well cover but it is so heavy and awkward that we don't use it. I want to make a new one that colds in half and light weight. I have made several attempts but is still heavy and awkward. Has anyone made one that folds in half and is strong enough to walk on and stores easily.

The stair well cover we made is not folding in the center, but folds to the side. It is somewhat heavy to ensure it can carry any weight that might step to the door, but being hinged to the side it is very easy to open and close.

Folding stair well cover

We are not able to fold ours to either side due to cabinets that we use on one side and and table on the other. I saw a design on "living the rv dream " site but there were no details and it looked like factory made but can not now find it.
