On the 460 under your carburetor air filter you may fine a plastic valve laying on engine that Will melt from heat of engine block.
The air lines feeding this valve effect the running of engine if plastic valve develops a pin hole leak crazy things will happen to engine running correctly.
My problem was complete dead engine by the time I discovered it with a hole melted in valve not pin hole.
Maybe something to check out.

I just don't understand why you guys don't want to install a fuel pressure gauge. It isn't that expensive or difficult to do and it would tell you if the pump is acting up when your motors act up. Do you not agree? Oh well it's your money.

Update:
Oh I will look into that fuel presure gage, sounds like a good idea!
Took the unit out last weekend, short trip, 160 miles, cool weather, in the 90's. No problems. Going to go again this weekend, hopefully all goes well. If it does I will try to let things be untill spring at which point I'll install the gage, watch the pressure and prepare to change out the fuel pump.
Thanks for all the input.

ford 460
when the rear pump goes out it will still run. if it is cool out and you do not push it to hard. if it quits let it sit and cool and it will restart. the problem is the rear pump gives the front pump lots of gas so it can pressurize it and send to injectors. the front pump is not capable of pulling enough fuel by itself. have you replaced your fuel filter? Steve

@stevenmiller2
I have changed the filter, this thing sat a great deal more than in ran in it's first years of life, actually from when it was new until now as it is a 1996 with (then) 12000 miles on it, 102 gen hours. I have nearly 15500 miles on it now, in cold weather it appears to not have a problem at all, when it is hot (really hot) it stops but will start and run after a 1 to 2 hour cool off. Then it may go 100 miles without incident, or as manyu as several hundred. I am considering changing out the filter once more to see if it has become contaminated. I have used it to go to the races the past few weekends, pulling a trailer 8X12, loaded with a couple motorcycles, gear, fuel, tools and such, not real heavy. Temps have been down in the 80's and 90's, no issues. The trips were also quite short, under a hundred miles one way. So are you saying there is a submerged tank pump, and an assist frame rail mounted pump?

You only have one fuel pump and that one is inside the tank.
You also need to run the self-tests to see if you have any codes.
The guy did not know what he was talking about when he told you the light had to be on to pull the codes.
You can do that yourself at anytime with a paper clip.
With a fuel tank making all of the banging I would say your fuel pump is OK.
Checking fuel pressure is a good idea.
How come you did not post these problems over on the "Ford Motorhome Chassis Forum"?
There is a lot of help on that Forum.
Here is the link to it:

It is fuel injected, I have read much, and been to several different sites, was not aware of the (subford) form mentioned above. For sure I will check that out, thank all of you for your help. I clearly don't know much but am learning everyday.
Thank you. When I had it towed in Amarrilo, the guy at the garage appeared to know his business, he told me that the fuel presure was at 38# (as I recall) and that the range was 25# to 45#? As previously posted when it runs it runs great, when it starts it's business it is a royal PITA! I have not had the clunking gas tank issues since I started running the loose cap, that was also about the same time teh temps dropped way down?
