Hey all, I am considering purchasing a 1999 Southwind 32' with the v-10. When I drove the coach and was accelerating onto the freeway it appeared to "hunt" for gears and almost felt like it was missing or trying to hold back. After you got to about 40 or so it smoothed out. In driving around town it also does the same thing when accelerating. HOwever, when I push the button on the shift lever to take the OD off, it runs great. I don't know if this is a transmission issue, something else mechanical or operator ignorance. Am I doing something wrong and driving in OD when I shouldn't be or is this a trait of this engine/transmission?

That doesn't sound normal to me. My Ford 360 V8 with the E40D doesn't do it.

We have a 2000 with the v10 same tranny "4R100" what you describe sounds like a problem of it not staying in OD when it should, that or the converter clutch is acting up. I would definitely have it checked out before I bought.

When was the transmission serviced last. The 4R100 was an improvement over the old E4OD, but still needs servicing. I keep mine serviced at 20,000 mile intervals. Heat really is a killer of the transmissions and oils, so keep it changed often.

It sure sounds like a problem. I had a 2000 Gerogie Boy w/V-10, it acted that way after the transmission blew the transfer from 3rd to OD and OD back to 3rd. Ford wanted about $3,500.00 for a rebuilt transmission. But, I was lucky to find a shop in Tucson that rebuilt it for about $1,600.00.

I would have a transmission shop put it on their tester. It could be a speed senor, there are two on that type of transmission.

Thanks for all the info guys. The seller of the MH took it back to the Ford garage and after having another technician look at it determineed it was a fuel problem. They changed the fuel filter and it took care of the problem. I guess it is human nature to look for the most complicated cure/problem when it could be the simpliest. I guess I should have recognized it since I had an identical problem with Mustang a few years back.
