When we bought our first coach (gas) in '99 we decided then and there that any fuel cost increases would not stop us from taking as many trips as we wanted.
My first diesel fillup in '03 was $1.45 per gallon. Today it approaches $3. Our attitude has not changed.
Now, though, we are fulltimers and stay longer at one destination. We've been in Pigeon Forge, TN since 5/5. We leave on 9/5 and head north, eventually attending the NKK rally in VT; then back to Florida and after amonth perhaps California.
I record every fillup and the odometer reading in a program developed for an RVer. I also record all my repairs and maintenance costs. The mpg result is interesting but does not affect our travel.
I usually like to fillup when my gauge indicates somewhere above 1/4 tank. Often it's near 1/2 tank when I do so. I use "The RVer's Friend" a directory of all the truck stops in North America. This book helps me to pre-plan my fuel stops during our travels. I highly recommend this book to all diesel owners.
By the way, I never fuel at the RV islands. I always line up with the truckers. I follow their protocol and have always had a good experience.
