I don't believe there is a limit on the PenFed card. I have the one that gives me a gift card. I'm on my second $500 card and will soon have my third $500 gift card. I tend to use Flying J and get a few cents off with that and then 5% on the PenFed. Works well for me.

PenFed is great but they did make a change awhile back that to continue to get the 5% it is necessary to make a minamal deposit in a CD (or possibly another choice) to continue the full 5%. Sometimes stations put a limit like $125 on credit card use at the pump. PenFed like some others must be used at the pump for the discount. Frequently makes as much as $20 savings on a fill up.

I use the PenFed Cash Rewards Visa card. I get a 5% cash rebate on all fuel. To get the discount I have to use locations where I can pay with the card at the pump.

PenFed requires a minimum $250 deposit in an account to get the full 5% discount, which is OK if you're a full-fledged member, I suppose.

The Good Sam/PFJ card gets me 3 cents a gallon, but the downside is it must be paid off each month.

I hesitate to use 'regular' VISA/MC cards to buy gas with because if you don't stay up with it, those 18% or 20% interest hits each month really add up. If I use a gas company card (on occasion, Gulf or Sunoco or such) I try to pay it off each month.

Unless they have changed recently, you only have to open a Money Market Savings account for $25.00 to get the 5% rebate. There is no limit on the amount of rebate each month that I know of. You have to pay at the pump to get the rebate, which means you can't use the truck pumps at truck stops!

Could well be. In Jersey, I get 3 cents though. Just a standard member.

We have a B.O.A. Visa card and the last time I tried to use it at the pump it shut off at $75. That's a P.I.T.A., so I called BOA and they told me that the limit is set by the station, not them.

A Caution about PenFED if you are self-employed. I tried to get their CC My Credit score is over 840, I pay off my credit cards every month and I have no debt but I am self-employed. They wanted three years of tax returns (my tax returns are over 100 pages) faxed to them. Then after receiving those they wanted "this" years tax return and wrote a nasty email that I had 60 days to comply or they would cancel my application. The problem was this years tax return were not due for another 8 months and there was no way I could deliver it to them. They also have held onto my my $25. deposit, which they would only take with a credit card as a cash advance (which incurred a fee) and refuse to refund that money unless I came into a branch in person and cancelled my account..

I would never use this company, they are unresponsive to customers, don't understand tax cycles, have no clue about self-employment and basically just a huge ripoff. Instead I use a Chase card which gives me 5% back on gas and from time to time discover also has promos for 5% off.

Another NOTE: You have to use the penfed card at the pump and they only allow you to swipe it twice. Many stations limit swipes to $ 75.00 at the pump. With Chase and Discover I can go inside, have the authorize the card once for $500 and then go pump and still get the discount. Much simpler and easier.

I use the B.O.A card and then swipe my Good Sam 3¢ card at Flying J's and so far in May. Have gotten $158.24, $139.46 and $170.69 without any shut off.

But at regular stations have gotten the $75 cut off.
One good reason to use Flying J that may be a little higher per gal.
But worth not having the hassle of most stations.

Jim,
Like Joe & Annette I put $25 in Money Market (which is earning) and got the "Plus Account".
Just stopped an a Casino in Washington State, Diesel $3.79 a gal and I ran the card twice to $125 then had to take the card inside (no 5% paying inside) so I got $250 fuel that I will get $12.50 back on for my trouble and got the $3.79 a gallon on the remaining purchase. $12.50 back for 5 minutes of trouble plus I still didn't pay anywhere near what Flying J charges. So that's about $150 an hour if those 5 minutes add up to an hour. It's more if you are paying $4.00 a gallon.
