After reading all the posts regarding PenFed I decided to phone them to see if this might be something we would be interested in and qualify for. BTW, I had first heard of PenFed a few months back when my brother did a vehicle loan through them. He gave them high marks all the way around. Anyway, last evening, I spoke with rep "Amy" who was extremely helpful, patient and knowledgeable. If you are not a member it will cost $5.00 to join and another $25.00 for the MM account. If you choose paper statements for either the monthly account or credit card billing, it will cost you $1.00 for each of them. Obviously they are strongly suggesting e-statements for free. Someone had mentioned in an earlier post that you could not get your money when closing the account unless you presented in person. I asked Amy and that is not true since obviously not everyone is close to one of their branches. As she explained there would be a few more security matters to navigate to ensure the person on the phone is really the account holder, otherwise no problem. I did end up applying and qualifying over the phone and am waiting for my card to be delivered. Currently we had been using AAA but it wasn't consistent with 5% since we didn't always have the percentage of fuel and other expenses exact. Hope this will be better.

If it's this one Sam’s Club 5-3-1 Card - CardTrak.com it also gives 3 percent cash back on dining and travel, and 1 percent cash back on all other purchases, up to a maximum of $5,000 in purchases annually.

Bob, do you know for sure that this card includes diesel as well as gasoline? I have sent an e-mail to Sams Club and will let everyone know what they say! Thanks for this info!

I don't know for sure, but as long as it's coming from a pump that also pumps gas, it should. I believe the real key is what they call the Merchant Category Code. If a card is swiped at an outside pump it would be recorded under MCC 5542, which would qualify the purchase for the rebate/reward. If it's swiped inside it would be recorded under MCC 5541, which would not qualify the purchase for rebate/reward.

Unless you do a lot of dining out or traveling, the PenFed Platinum Rewards Visa Signature Card is still a better deal than the Sam's club card. We don't use our coach all year round, so we actually earn more points/dollars on the 3 points for grocery store purchases. Keep in mind this includes places like Walmart Super Centers. So as long as they sell groceries, you earn the reward points for anything else in the store such as electronics, tires, batteries, etc.

You can redeem the points for Visa cash cards, but each point is worth less than .01 (approximately .0085). So for an example you would need 5900 points for a $50.00 Visa cash card.

However since there is no maximum limit as there is on most other programs, the points accumulate very quickly and continually with no cutoff.

The card I just applied for and am getting is the PenFed Platinum Cash Rewards Card which is 5% off purchases at the pump. Think the points one you are referring to is PenFed Platinum Rewards Visa. If you go to PenFed's site you can see all the different options offered. Can see why it's a bit confusing.
