Gas Engines
I am considering upgrading my 1989 Bounder and have considered all the Diesel or gas options. I have chosen gas. My Bounder has a 454 a great and solid engine but all I can find are the Triton V10's which I am told do not perform as well or as long as the 454. Are they currently making a Class A with a 454 or what is I am hearing about the Triton V10 off base.

if its 2011 or newer the Ford V10 is the only option, I am not familiar with the V10 but have read a lot of threads on here on how reliable they are.
If you want a Chevy motor your going to have to look at 2010 and older RVs.
There is a ford chassis forum to read and ask questions about the V10

Here is the Workhorse forum as well

With the demise of the 8.1 l Chevy engine ( last off spring of the 454 ), and Workhorse chassis, the gas motor home market is the Ford V-10's domain.
I believe the newer V-10 , in it's 3 valves per cylinder layout , gets better reviews than it's 2 valve predecessor.

Early model V10s (2000 - 2005) had some rare issues with spitting spark plugs (read - very rare) these seemed to be resolved. (I have a 2001, never any problems)
Seems like a good solid engine-tranny combo. good power, smooth.

The newest V10 with the newest transmisson is a pretty solid drive train.

Herein lies the answer to OP's question above. There is only one chassis choice so therefore you are limited to the V-10. The V-10 is a 6.8 liter, and essentially a 5.4 V8 with two additional cylinders to make the V-10. The Triton V-10 is not a bad engine overall. I would not rule out a good newer MH because of this engine. Combined with the new 6 speed trans would be the best combo, but the old 5 speed trans is not a bad choice.
The GM choices in the last years were called 8.1 liter, instead of the older 454 cu inches (which was also called 7.4 liter). These GM choices only had a 4 speed trans, the 4L80E, which was a good trans. Just limited to the 4 gears.

Uhhh don't most of the 2000+ Chevy 8.1's mate up to the Allison transmission? Of which the post 2005-ish (I could be wrong on the exact year) were all 6 speeds with grade brakes?

You might be right, I was thinking about the older ones.

We have the Ford V-10, and a 26K chassis. The engine runs great, nice and smooth, plenty of power, and everything I have read up on them very dependable over the long haul. Some people seem to think you need the diesel engine for the longevity, but if you look at the Classified section on IRV2 few people sell their diesel pushers with enough miles on them that would be a concern even for the gas engine. The V-10 is a great engine and the maintenance on them is just as easy as doing it on a regular gas engine vehicle.

Way off base, way, way, way off base.
When the issues with the 6.0 Powerstrokes first came up we bought a few V-10's in the P/U's and cube vans in the fleet. We hoped that they would last the two or three years it would take to sort out the issues with the diesels.
10 years later we still have 2 of them on the road, 1 which is only driven locally by a guy just under 2 years away from retirement and with about 300k miles on it. He doesn't want a new truck, he wants to drive the one has now.
We now only buy diesels for the trucks that do 75k++ miles per year.

I would point out that when comparing the Ford F53 V10 engine performance. It doesn't matter which brand coach, or length, or chassis wt. rating you choose. Your dealing with the same power output rating spec on the engine. So shorter and lighter is better...as far as how coach will perform. So from GVWR of 16,000# to 26000# the HP and torque is the same. One big factor is the 2016 F53 has a 6 speed trans.

I have a 1999 v10 with 105k miles on it. New plugs and coils 2 years ago. It purrs like a kitten and I would not hesitate to drive it anywhere.
