Gen set service
The Onan 10K in our 2008 American Eagle needs help. Our general service shop has done what they can including replacing oil & filter, replaced fuel pump, 2 days of diagnostics with Onan tech support, etc. but still not working. It runs for 15-20 min and shuts down. Any recommendations for a reputable Onan service shop in the Houston, TX area? Thanks very much.

My Onan did the same thing but it is a 5500 and the tech couldn't get his test box to work But he just spent 2 weeks on one doing the same thing and bingo it was putting out over 60 cycles. It would start at 62.5 and when the load hits it went over 67 and the board would shut it down and no warning light. So he adjusted the governor and was out in 3 hours and cost was $250. So now I have a volt amp and frequency coming out or the generator because the tech told me and I agree it will save you time.

Thanks

Did it throw any codes?
Mine started shutting down after a few minutes as well but had a trouble code related to overheating. New thermostat seemed to fix it. They also found the belt about to break and a tension bolt broken.

Mine only shows codes if you request them. As I recall (not at the coach now) you need to push the main switch to the off position and it will show a stored code.

Start with the Onan trouble code given at shutdown. I'm sure Onan tech support already asked for those, but without repeating the code here we are just shooting in the dark. There are literally over a dozen reasons it will shut itself down. There is no point wasting time talking about frequency meters or oil pressure if the generator is reporting a mechanical or temperature-related problem. The code is as useful for what it is NOT as for the hint it gives about the nature of the problem.

EZer way " Kill A Watt" about $25, plugs in to any powered outlet. Reads voltage and frequency, plus you can plug anything in to it and it will readout amps or watts it's using.

Mine showed error code 36. Wound up taking the rig to Southern Plains Cummins/Onan. Two hours of diagnosis time and if needs a new control board. $1410 includes parts & labor. Ouch, but at least I will have A/C for a trip to Palo Duro Canyon starting this weekend. Best to all
