Greetings:

Just got the Generac Diesel Generator back out of the shop for a "stalling problem". It now has a new mother board and new "cut-off" protectors on the oil and cooling. It runs fine when the coach is turned off and parked. However, going down the road, it starts and runs only a few minutes before turning itself off.

Before taking it to the shop, it turned itself off rolling and while parked! Has anyone experienced this? I have plenty of fuel, and am not noticing any other issues with my coach.

We had a similar problem with the generac in our Rexhall MH. No one could fix it. One day we were looking at things and tried an experiment. We took an air hose (from a compressor) and blew air at the front of the MH near the Generac. It poped and backfired and then shut down. Exactley what happened when we tried to run down the highway with it on. It would just shut down.. We made an air damn and put it directley in front of the generac to reduce the direct air around the air cleaner. necver had a problem after that. The basic problem was the air flow at the air cleaner caused the unit to run lean (interferred w/ flow of fuel). it solved our problem. good luck ed

thanks for the response..my problem is that it turns itself off, like a pretection cut-off of some kind. It will start and run, and then shut down. It does not sound like any kind of stalling or stammering, just like you hit the kill switch??

Hammer, tap, twist bang and pop test...

If the engine sounds strong but simply cuts off, then you may be right, it could be an interlock.

It could also be an interconnect.

So what you need to do is sneak up on the problem.

Open all of the access doors so you can touch everything around the generator.

Make sure it is full of water if water cooled.

The sensor is usually real close to the top, when the engine is running it drops a little, and if driving causes it to be at a different attitude then it could think it is out of water.

Start it up and let it come up to operating temperature.

Now start to GENTLY tap and wiggle things.

First would be where the control cable attaches from the coach to the generator, twist and wiggle to see if anything happens.

Next repeat for every wire you can see.

Lastly, get a short stick like a broomhandle and start tapping things.

The oil sending unit, the temperature sending unit, control unit etc.

If none of this works, then you may need to see if you can remove the control line and manually run the generator as if it was not in the coach and take it for a drive.

The short of all of this is you are going to need to chase down the problem, hopefully you can simulate the problem while parked.

I'm just throwing this out for information. I can't remember all the symptoms with my Generac, but it is on a slide-out from the front cap of my 2003 Dutch Star and the diesel supply hose got snagged in the rear connector.....was pinched for awhile and caused "restricted fuel supply " problems and then when finally released it had a small hole in the line causing fuel supply problems because of sucking air into the line. Took awhile to figure it out, and wish I had access to the forum and your comments at that time. I'm enjoying reading back through the comments, issues, forums and blogs. Thanks to all who contribute.

Thanks..we have replaced all sending units, sensors, mother board and then it did it again. The problem is that it does not always act up when it is in the shop! They are replacing the fuel solanoid and inspecting all fuel systems! Glad I bought the extended warranty!!
