Have my continuing project, '97 21' gulfstream MH (1.5 years of experience now) showing generator problems. It's a 1996 series NP40G generac. First problem was the coach AC unit would trip on thermal (compressor) when using gen power. While doing some further checks, found 130 VAC output when almost no load was present, dropped to 115V with at least 5 amp load. Then at no load generator motor speed began to fluctuate and sounding like it was about to throw the rod. I'm thinking the CCG control board is shot. But also thinking that it isn't much more than a boat anchor. Just back from a month long cross country trip and never used it. With the small size of the RV, the cab A/C is enough to keep us cool when driving, and we just don't dry camp. Always stay where there is at least electrical hook ups.
Still fairly new at this RV stuff, anyone have a reason I should repair/keep a generator? The only run time it gets is the monthly 1/2 hour health run.

I've only used mine maybe 5 times in 2 years, but I'm glad I had the option. And now that I know what it takes to dry camp I will probably use it more. We will probably get a class c next year it must have a generator. Never know when you will need it.

We only have about 250 hours on our gen set after 10 years. Not much use but still wouldn't be without it.

The only real reason I need my generator is for cooling the coach in the summer trips. We live in Texas and the coach will warm up about 10 degrees an hour even with the dash air.

With our trailers, we never used a generator and we dry camped most of the time. We found that the two of us could make about 3-5 days with two batteries if we were cautious. We only camped where it was more or less ideal weather, slightly to the cool side.

The gray water was more of a limiting factor for us. Every third or fourth day, we hitched up and went to a dump station for empty and refill. That amount of time, put the charge back into my batteries for another 3-4 days.

From what you are saying, it does not seem like you need the generator, especially if your dash air is satisfactory.
