Generator Problem

We have an 08 Allegro Open Road (Ford gas) with an Onan 7000 generator. I have done all the scheduled maintenance, including exercising the generator for two hours under load every 3-4 weeks and kept StaBil in the gas when not used for a month or two.

Today we took a short run to check out everything in anticipation of an upcoming trip and after running the generator for a couple of hours it quit. It was difficult to start but did and ran for maybe 40 minutes and then quit again. I changed the oil and filter a few weeks ago and the level is where it should be. We got an error code 41, Generator Rotor Fault. We called Cummings Southern Plains in Ft. Worth and have an appointment to bring it in.

I have no idea what is involved with a Generator Rotor Fault and really neither did the service writer but said the tech would be in tomorrow and would be able to take a look at it. We would like to have an idea what we're actually looking at. The generator has a little less than 300 hours.

Any insight into what could have happened and what expense we might incur would be greatly appreciated,

RJ & Evelyn

Generator Problem

Verify you have more than 1/4 tank of fuel....most fuel pickups are setup so the generator cannot use fuel below 1/4 tank and potentially leave you stranded.

From the service manual here are some other simple things you could test for:

Gasoline Models
A. Vapor lock may occur in high ambient temperatures: operate in ambients at less than 120F; verify
proper installation to prevent air recirculation; correct as necessary.
B. Verify steady DC voltage at fuel pump while genset is running; repair wiring as necessary.
C. Run genset on shop fuel supply; verify tank level and fuel line condition in vehicle.
D. Verify carburetor altitude setting; readjust as necessary.
E. Verify choke operation, setting and linkage damage; readjust, repair or replace as necessary.
F. Measure throttle stop frequency; readjust as necessary.
G. Measure fuel pump pressure/flow: replace fuel filter or pump as necessary.

Thanks. Good info. Temps were around 120 on my tpms. Maybe that caused the problem?
