A friend of mine is on the road in South Texas and his own and 12.5 K generator Will not stay running. When he gets here later this afternoon we need to try to get it running. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Most gensets have a low oil level cut off. Check the oil level first (maybe change the oil while you're at it). If the oil level is good, then I would go to fuel flow next. New fuel filter first, then try to determine if the fuel pump is working well.

.....most of the modern / high-end Onan genset control switches have a self diagnostic and fault code dispaly function that points you in the direction of the problem....dont own a 12.5 but could also be an overheat issues--broken water pump belt, faulty temp sensor, or air/coolant flow thru radiator issue....

Update. After cleaning air filter and installing fuel filter, cranked the generator up, ran for about 10 seconds, then shut off. Sounded like someone had dropped rocks in it. Unless someone that reads this has a suggestion, I am over my head.
Also, while creeping through the Houston traffic, the transmission locked into 3rd. It will downshift, but won't go past 3rd. He has an 11 speed Eaton transmission. Any thoughts appreciated.

He will need to pull the shift handle tower off the top of the transmission.

Then he can use a long screwdriver to re align the shift rails.

While the tower is off, check for wear and tightness on the guide bolt that keeps the shift handle straight.

If the tower bolts were loose, that may be the only problrm, otherwise it may need a new shift handle or the tip built up with weld.

....ok--you have input all over the place....sounds like your friend has a toy hauler truck of some kind [eg Eaton 11-speed tranny?????]....a few but not many RVers on this forum will be familiar with that rig--I would think.......as for the genset--you haven't said what brand but sounds like you have/got air in the fuel line....these little diesel engines "rock and roll" when they are fuel starved....holding the start button on or off [ie, Onan rocker switch] will activate fuel pump and may clear the fuel line.....

Thanks to all who responded to the problem with the generator and transmission problem. The unit is a 1999 Monaco Signature Classic wth an 11 speed Eaton automatic with a 12.5k onan generator. Turns out there was a loose battery cable which sent engine into safe mode. They are now safely on their way home.
