My Generac 5500 generator works fine, but has a "rattling" noise when running -- anyone experienced this? It has 269 hours, we use it regularly in our 2000 Sea View. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Hey, Charlie!
We also have a 2000 34' Sea View (8341), with a Generac. Yep, it rattles. Just like yours. I guess it's just the nature of a Generac. We have just under 300 hrs. on ours and it works perfectly well, but I miss the quietness of the Onan in our old motor home. I'll be watching this thread to see if someone comes up with a solution to the problem.
We've been looking for a 2001 - 2003 diesel pusher and right now it's kind of a toss-up between a Newmar and an Alpha. The Alphas have Generac diesel generators, but I have heard nothing but good about them, although they are a little noisier than Onans.

I haven't noticed any rattle in my 2002 Generac 5500 and we have about 250 hours on it. It's quieter than the Onan 5000 we had in our previous coach.

Thanks, Larry and Gary. I'm comforted somewhat by the fact that you have the same noise, Larry. Gary doesn't, but it is a 2002 -- maybe some change?
Anyway, thanks to both of you. We'll look for other responses.

Hi Charlie, Have 02 Dutch Star with 5500 Generac and had same noise, got a lot of dirty looks while dry camping at Nascar tracks. Repair shop pulled generator and found idler pully bad. Much better now although still noisier than most. Good luck. Dick

Had a rattle with an onan on our previous motor home. The springs used to absorb vibration between the generator and the mounting plate were loose and causing the rattle. I took a four plastic caps of some 2 gallon jugs and placed them under the springs to eliminate the metal to metal contact. Rattle stopped immediately.

I have a 7.5KW diesel Generac in my Gulfstream and it is a bear to start. It just cranks and cranks and sometimes requires me to start it from the compartment with the glow plugs. I have tried the switch inside to do the same from the dash and it sometimes helps...but only sometimes. Any suggestions as to how to tune this unit up?

I think I would start with the ones you can do yourself such as changing the air filter, oil/filter, and plugs. Does your gen have a soot filter near the muffler? if so this need to be cleaned. Also, check the spark wires. Also, does it have a warm or cool start device? If these basics do not work, probably need a pro to look at it. s/Toby
