My coach is a 1994 Gulfstream Scenic Cruiser with a Generac NP66G generator. When I press the remote switch on the dash, the generator does not start. The generator will start and stop using the switch locted on the generator.

Below is a diagram of the receptacle the dash switch plugs into. The contact numbers are those on the switch. The * is a locating pin.

My dash switch is Carlingswitch, V2D1, 9305, 20A 12V, US Pat. 5105059
It has spade connectors at locations 2,3,7&8. I took the switch apart, cleaned it and it seems to be working. There is no continuity between 2&3 until I press the switch. There is always continuity between 7&8.

When I use a jumper wire on the receptacle I can start the generator when I connect contacts 2&6 or 5&6, I can stop it connecting 2&4 or 5&4. Connecting 7&8 will turn on the generator indicator light. When I plug the switch in the receptacle, nothing happens.

Is there an electrical wizard that can help me out? It almost seems as if the spade connectors on the switch are in the wrong locations, but it did work in the past. I can be contacted off line at: jjbarbic@earthlink.net. My spam blocker may not recognize you but it will send me a message that your mail is there.

Thanks,
Jack

I would need to see the switch and to take a few more readings to do more than to guess, but at first glance I would suspect the switch. If connecting 7 to 8 turns on the light, but it reads closed, you are probably reading the lamp when it is open. Does it read 0 ohms or some other low number? For this type of thing you need a good quality meter that is very accurate.

What do you have between 5 & 6? Once you take a switch apart, you should get a new one even if it still works. They are not designed to be opened, although when I still worked for a living I very ofther did so as a trouble shooting tool. Since you have had the switch apart, what terminals are connected to the center pole and which are to each side of the closed position?
