Gold in the Motorhome?
No, not real gold, but the gold trim around the shower. So I'm going through the list of updates to the 98 Storm I want to make (carpet, flooring, back splash) after I pick it up. The only thing I can't figure how to update (at the moment) is the gold trim around the shower enclosure. I really don't care for the look. I'm guessing it's anodized and would probably come off with oven cleaner, but not sure that's the route I need to take. Anyone made any changes to this gold trim and how did it come out?

Yep, polished brass was the "in" thing back then! My coach has all brass trim also. I don't think there is any practical way to get rid of it!

If it is anodized, it's not going to come off easily. That is down in the metal. I think I'd just scuff it up and paint it.

MSHappyCampers, it was probably the cat's meow back then, maybe it will come back into style, lol.
Todd157k, I'm sure it would be a huge pain to remove. Sanding and painting it would probably be the easier way in the end. Thanks for the help.

69Stang,
"Anodizing" aluminum is a process by which a semi-hard coating, similar to Powder Coating is applied to raw aluminum. It can be removed but, like many tasks in RVs, it's going to be a ton of LABOR!! I think you've got a few options here.
1. Remove all the shower stall trim and take it to a local Powder coater for their estimate on how well it can be re-coated and, what it will look like.
2. Remove all of it and, using very fine sand paper (the wet or dry stuff) and, with a lot of water assisting you, it will come off that way too. And, that process will bring out the normal, aluminum color. You can continue the process with ultra-fine steel wool to the point that, aluminum polish will be needed to finish the process.
Once it's at that stage, you can, if you feel like putting that much labor into it, make all that shower trim look like it was CHROMED! And, when aluminum is taken down to that kind of polish, it will stay for quite some time before a touch up polishing is needed. Or, if you get it to any point in the process you like, as in semi-shiny, dull shiny, etc, you can then simply "CLEAR COAT" it and it will basically look like factory finish.
3. You can remove all the trim and, take it to an RV restoring out fit and, let them match it all up and, order you up all new pieces, only with the finish and color of your choice.

I took gold colored trim off of ours (cabinet pulls and handles) and had it powder coated. Any good powder coater will media blast any part they are coating so no need to do any prep. Looks great and lasts forever. Our choice of color was satin black

Fire up and datrbone8, more great ideas. I hadn't even thought of removing the pieces and having them professionally refinished. I'll have to check into that. Thanks.

I'd have to disassemble the entire shower!

If brass it will last.
If anodized it still will last.
If trim parts like faucet covers then hardware stores often have replacements.
If knobs or other misc hardware store items and not custom made they may be standard off the shelf items that can be replaced but keep old so you can change back
We like brass but that is us...Our shower control cover is brass and cracked and they only sell chrome. \#=&/#.
If molding trim you could paint in place but that is a pain.
