Looking at your post, you say "mapping software"
rather than how to find streets, etc.
I use a Delorme Earthmate, mounted on the roof in a weatherproof enclosure to give far better satellite acquisition, tied into a laptop, and use Delorme's TOPO 4.0 as I am interested in mapping and where I am going in the boondocks, and also hiking in the national forests, Parks and BLM land when I get there. I can print out topo maps of the areas I want to exlpore before we go

There may be better, faster, prettier or accurate, but the Delorme Earthmate with its 2003 Street Atlas Deluxe software works very well. Good bang for the buck and once you learn to use all the functions, you will probably be very satisfied.

Delorme has just released a new version of the Earthmate GPS, it is much smaller and supposed to be 3 times more powerful. Check out their WEB page www.delorme.com.
I have been using the older model and software and it worked okay. Sometimes it would lose the connection and would not reconnect. Otherwise it has been helpful.
