Gray water drain cleaner

Can a use a household drain cleaner (like Draino) in my gray water drains?

It's your rig so you can use anything you like. I personally use boiling water if its the kitchen, and CLR followed with hot water if the shower.

I suspect Drano is pretty caustic and personally I would not use it in my tanks for fear of what it might do to the rubber valves and any gaskets. Are you cleaning the tanks or do you have a blockage?

I would not use it, just because it is so caustic and could damage seals or maybe even the tanks, not sure though. Try boiling water as suggested.....

I would just put some Dawn dish soap in the drains and let it set a bit then flush with boiling or just hot water. Dawn does a great job on breaking down about anything.

Are you trying to speed up a slow drain or clean the tank.. For tank cleaning (Sensors and the like) no Drano is not a good choice,

By the way do you know Draino is (The classic crystal type) Lye and Aluminum shavings, Get it wet and it gets real nasty real fast.

True story: Truck was venting a spray which was turning grass brown, Troopers stopped him and we returned him to the shipper.. What was in the truck?

A concenterated cleaner consisting of a Chloride compund (At this point I forget just which bleach they used) LYE, and 50 percent water.

Why was the tanker spewing spray?

Well they needed to ship thousands of gallons so the CEO called the truck place and ask for a tanker.. Dispatcher said "Stainless or aluminum" He turned to his chief chemiest and said "Stainless or Aluminum" She said "What's the difference" he relayed the quesiton "Stainless Steel costs more" He relayed the replay and she said "Aluminum should be OK. I dispatched Motor Carrier/Haz Mat Officer Geneva to the scene.

Just befor she retired (Which was just before I retired) Geneve and I were having coffee together, She showed me some photos.. Seems they same company (Like 15 years later) had another thousands of gallons shipment.. Same CEO, Same Chemist, (She's got to be sleeping with her boss) Same answers.

I can tell you those tankers had the worst case of "Michigan Cancer" I have ever seen, There was not much left of the tank.

You can use any septic-tank-safe drain cleaner in an RV system, though I would make sure there was at least some water in the waste tanks when I did, just so undiluted cleaner did not sit right in the valve area. We use household drain cleaner in the shower a couple times a year to help rid it of soap scum and hair.

For the shower and bathroom sink I use a ZipIt . It works great for removing hair.

In the past I did use Draino but like Gary said I made sure there was water in the tank and dumped quickly after using the cleaner.
