Groovy mud flaps

My mud flap on passenger side has been grooved by three of the five treads on my 22.5 Michelins. It must have been on windy days this summer out west. Anybody ever seen something like this ? There isn't any apparent wear on the tire.

Nope never saw anything like that.

My OEM mudflaps are on a very stiff arm and now I know why.

I can't get a pic of ours because the coach is an hour away in storage, but I can tell you our OEM passenger-side dually mudflap is, literally shredded for the bottom few inches. Ours looks like a mudflap with fringe now.

I know it's kinda hard to see, but the pic below (close cropped from a whole coach shot), taken when the Bounder was new in 2006, shows how that mudflap has a curve in it that's curved towards the tire. We didn't notice it at the time. Not until a couple of seasons later did we realize it was being ripped.

How is it one careless match can start a forest fire but it takes a whole box to start a campfire?

Great. Something else to worry about.

Cliff, I recognize that pattern, I get it all the time on my truck.

At some point in time the mudflap got flipped over upside-down, likely while reversing, and was that way long enough to wear down until it flipped back down.

Usually a "Semi-Truck" thing, must be a "Fleetwood" thing in your case.

My hubby sings Paul Simon on our anniversary.

"Still Crazy After All These Years."

I don't think that's the case here. The flap is fairly ridged and is bolted on half way up. It has just enough play in it to reach the tire. I believe this happened while driving into 35-40 mph head winds out West this summer.

Cliff, I'm pretty sure both the passenger and drivers side experienced the same headwinds. If one got affected, the other would have also.

Besides, if you look at the wear marks you can clearly see the angles differ between the grooves. That was caused by the flap being inverted over the tire.

There's only one thing that can do that.

The drivers side doesn't have a forward flap and the passenger side forward flap cannot be inverted. Just like Ripleys used to say " believe it or not " :-)

I'll have to take a closer look at mine - when the snow melts! - but I'm pretty sure only my passenger-side dually flap is shredded. The driver's side is fine.
