Guardian generator oil leak.....

The generator in our motorhome is a Guardian RV 75G, 7.5 KW. It only has 92 hours on it of which over 25 hours are just exercise time. Generator is just past 2 years old.

Oil leak is from the bottom pan. No leak at the filter or drain hose or any visable oil line.

Any ideas of what is going on. Guardian has a 3 year warranty but after year 2 the owner pays for removal and reinstalation. That sucks.

Thanks.

Dick

You may have had some bolts to work loose. Try tightening them and see if the leak goes away.

Hi Mike,

I have gone over every nut and bolt I can see and reach. Everything I can see or feel above the bottom plate, called the "tray, V-twin RV" is dry. This tray or what I call the bottom plate is the main bottom support for the whole generator and V-twin motor.

The top of this bottom plate toward the front and operator side is wet with oil. The underneath of the bottom plate toward the front and operator side, including the area of the bottom air out screen is wet with oil and when rinning sprays drops of oil on the ground from that area. Not good.

I suspect the crank case gasket or the 10 bolts that hold the bottom sump to the crank case. However the bottom plate prevents me from seeing or getting to those 10 bolts to even try to tighten them. There is also the possibility of a leaking lower crankshaft seal which is also out of view.

These generators are not made to be maintained in any fashion besides changing oil, and various filters. Yes the valve system is accessable if necessary but forget about the bottom end.

I think I will just have to bite the bullet and accept the cost of having it removed, fixed and reinstalled. Bummer.

Dick

I had an oil leave develop at about the same time as you. I happen to have been at the FMCA rally and the manufacture was there. I was led to believe they know about the leak developing and had it repaired for me at no charge. There was no questioning if I had warranty or not. It was a major job. They shipped parts to dealer where I was travelling to. The generator has to be removed completely. I might suggest you give Guardian a call to discuss this.
