Hammering in exhaust

I do not know if this is in the right forum.
Thanks to those who helped us with the fuses. Pace arrow 2002. We started up the MH and we hear a noise like a hammering in the exhaust system. We had never had this before. After going under and checking I found a 3/8 rubber hose that was burnt. This hose is directly behind the drivers side muffler cross over pipe. The hose was burnt from touching the crossover pipe. The hose was a little long so was able to cut and reapply until further repair. The hose is a 3/8, however it was stretched larger at one end for the connection.
The hose had Type B 04 05 01-5051 CIP written on it. There was no fluid on the ground.
What is this hose for? Is there any problem driving the RV to get service with the hammering noise?
Any help is appreciated.

I can't imagine what the hammering sound is, or that the burnt hose has anything to do with it. Exhaust noises other than a rumble is usually the pipe banging on something as it vibrates, meaning a hanger or bracket has broken somewhere. That is usually described as a banging or clanging noise rather than hammering, though.

If your engine still runs smoothly, I would be willing to drive it.

Thanks for the answer. The engine is running smooth. We assumed we would have to take it to a Workhorse service center. We tried several Dealers and they keep referring us to ABC Bus. Our coach is out of warranty so ABC Bus will not handle it. Do you know anything about Golby Motor Corp. in Orlando, good or bad?

The hammering noise is probably one of two things. A loose baffle in the exhaust, or more sinister the early sounds of a catalytic converter going bad.

I had the same thing happen, and when the catalytic converter finally gives it up, it essentially plugs the exhaust system. The engine will not run above at idle at that point.

Thanks for the information. We got it to a Workhorse dealer and it is the Cat converter.

Ouch. I'll bet the cat converter for the Workhorse is pricey! Glad you got the problem identified easily, though.

As a polution control device, the cat converter should be covered under warranty for 5 yrs. and 50,000 miles.
