Yes, the water held in the bowl in a RV simulates a trap because the water creates a buffer between the tank and the air in your RV like a trap does. However, every time you flush and the flapper opens that pseudo trap is breached unlike flushing a home toilet where the trap is continuously replenished with water. In that brief moment of time when the toilet is flushed and the tank and the air in your RV is one in the same, odors that exist will escape.
You should respect the fact that people have different use cases in their RV and different configurations. Our small Class C is configured such that the toilet sits immediately and directly over the black tank. There is no meandering piping to mitigate smell. When the toilet is flushed you're looking into the tank just like you are standing in an outhouse. There is no circumstance when you are standing above that toilet looking directly at the waste that you are not going to smell that waste water.
In a small Class C when you're not in the position to dump for an entire weekend or more and you only have a 20 gallon tank to begin with, this "just use more water" business is nonsense. When you use more water than it takes to flush you end up filing a small tank like that before you have an opportunity to dump anywhere. I never run out of black tank capacity with urine and waste. I always run out of capacity with water that is needed to flush. In that case, a product like HC is not only not a waste of money but it's a smart decision.
I'm glad that your situation is different and you do not require a product like this but don't insult the intelligence of people that have decided this is best for them. Not everyone is running with a big class A.

We are full timing in a Class A, & if you were to flush our toilet, you could look right down into the black tank, too.
After reading all of the positive comments about HC, I think maybe we should try it. Using TT, I have not seen (rather smelled) any improvements.

I just googled HC.
It seems that HC makes different products for RV toilets.
Which one are y'all talking about, so that I don't purchase the wrong one?

We've been using the standard HC treatment. They do make an "Extreme", but that is for severe problems.

Help! After a thorough rinse of the black tank we swithed to Happy Camper. Three fills and today I thought I saw tissue by the flapper seal thingy, so I got my handy brush and went to clean it out, thinking, “How odd!”. 6 years of full timing and I’ve never seen anything like it: a white sludgy almost pasty build-up or growth growing up the drain tube and trying to cover the flapper. It isn’t tp at all!
I treat with one scoop in a toilet bowl filled with water. Drain. Fill And drain two more toilet bowls. I do this immediately, as instructions say. We have rinsed the black tank after draining after each dump.
What the heck is this white pasty growth growing and why? Is it safe? Will it wash out? Having husband do an intense clean out tomorrow. A little afraid to use the product. Kinda scared about Happy Camper right now.
