Heat/AC control

My heat/AC temp. control switch is not working properly. When I change the temp controller to more cool or less cold or heat, it will not change the temp. The AC/Heat/Defroster switch and fan switch works fine.

I have traced the cable to a valve in the coolant line which seems to go into the heater core under the hood. I can manually open or close this valve and make the Temp change. But the control knob on the dash will not move the cable.

Has anyone else had this problem with an older base model Ford Chassis?

Is there a repair or will I need to replace the inside controller?

Thanks

Well I just had an Ahha moment!! I was playing with the control knob which felt tight with no play. I reached up under the dash and got a hand on the back side of the knob. I could feel the cable housing and bare wire so with the other hand I began turning the knob...cable didn't move!! I could feel that the cable was connected and would get a little tension on it when I moved the knob. Humm, I pulled the knob off the control and using a pair of thin needle nose pliers tried to turn the control shaft. You guessed it ...shaft turned and cable moved opening and closing the valve under the hood.
After carful examination I found a small crack in the control knob and some rifling inside where it had been turning on the metal shaft.

After some research I found a replacement knob online. $15.98 and $18.00 shipping!!! WHAT...That's ridiculous to say the least !! I began to examine the pictures of this little 14K GOLD knob and noticed it had a silver metal insert in the hole, the one in my hand didn't!! Went back to the dash with my flash light and there it was pushed way back up the shaft. I managed to fish it out and off the shaft (Very tedious job) and with a little Super Glue and clamp around the outside I was able to make it solid again.
After a little wait I replaced the knob and everything is working fine, at least for now....I'll probably be ordering that knob down the road, LOL
I don't mind the price of the Knob as high as it may be, but $18.00 Shipping on a 4oz piece of plastic, that ain't right!!!

My daughter 97 Honda accord cable was stiff and will kill a knob in the winter. I used a large compression fitting ferrule over the knobs shaft that fit perfect.
