I want to install a tachometer in my 2000 Gulfstream which is on a Chevy van chassis and has the 454 V8. Anyone know where the tach hooks up?

There is a tach output on the plug from the distributer.

We installed a tach on our 1996 MH with the 454 CID motor and as I recall it connected to the distributor, to 12v power, and to ground. There should be instructions with the tach you buy. Be sure to make a good ground connection, perhaps using a star washer. Once our ground wire came loose and the tach needle jumped all over the place. Re-tightning and using a star washer fixed it.

Thanks. The trick is finding the exact wire. If it is marked, it will be easier. Actually I was hoping there was a connection under the dash so I would not have to pull the doghouse, but I guess it's not that difficult.

Other hookups are easy. I once had my tach needle in my pickup moving about 100 rpm up and down as I varied the intensity of the dashboard lighting. Tach company rep said it's radio frequency interference and to run the tach ground direct to the battery. I did and the needle is rock solid now.

Well I called Autometer tech support. They looked it up and said there are two wires off the coil, a pink wire and a white wire with black stripe. The tach signal is the white wire with black stripe.
