Buy the 7/16 X 14 wing nut and run a 7/16 X 20 tap through it. This should produce a useable enough thread to secure the air cleaner.

What I should have said that if the outside diameter of the hex nut uses a 7/16" wrench then the inside diameter is usually 1/4" - 20 threads per inch, which is a common size for for air filter wing nuts. Most small engine air filters take them although some foreign generators may need a metric nut. Sorry if I confused anyone. tinker

What I am looking for is a 7/16 by 20 wing nut. That means 7/16 I.D.
