Actually your C-Max has a key. It is a blade type key and it is inside of your remote released by a button. Ever have a case where you need to lock the car with it running? I have a Prius (Quit laughing, men drive Prius!). There have been times that I have needed to lock the car with it running. When I lock the car door with the blade key, it does not set the alarm. This could work for using as a toad, just with the car not running.

Only downside to locking with the blade key from inside of the fob? If you lock it this way, you must unlock it this way. Your remote button won't open it because while the car is locked, the car doesn't know it is locked. Hence the alarm not setting.

Probably a gm thing.

On our first trip out towing our current toad, a Chevy Tahoe, the first time I locked it was at the campground the night before as we were planning a big second day. Next morning, we got around early, and were ready to pull out at 6 am. Since I hadn't pulled it with the doors locked yet, we didn't know that this would set off the (antitheft?) alarm.

We know now, and the rest of the campground found out that morning also.
