Help with slide out

Hello all.
I recently purchased my motorhome knowing that I had to make repairs and planning on a complete remodel. The previous owner explained the problem to me, however I did not understand what he told me like I thought. The slide out motor works fine, but the gearbox is bad. I thought it was part of the motor but it's a separate part. I'm having trouble locating the gear needed to fix it as I dont even know what it's called, let alone where to find it. I called 2 different RV dealers / parts suppliers that are local and they couldn't tell me what or where to look. I dont know who the manufacturer of the slide out mechanism is, and the RV manufacturer is out of business. The gears in the gearbox are bronze. The spiral (helical or wormdrive) gear is fine, the gear for the drive axles is stripped. My RV is a 95 rexhall aerbus xl3650. Anybody know what it's called or where to get one? Thanks

Glad to have you join us here in the forums.

Unfortunately , most times the gear sets are not available without purchasing the gear housing /motor assembly.

If you could post a picture of the housing and gear , maybe a member here can tell you of other manufacturers who used the part ; so you could look for the part at RV wreckers . Or give you info on the part's original manufacturer.

Most likely it's a power gear, which was bought out by lippert, lippert website has drawings of replacement gears, just match it up

Pictures

So I haven't figured out the part name for sure, I think it's a crown gear? The only one I have found so far I can't find dimensions so I'm not sure it's the right part. The first picture is is the original gear. It is bronze and chewed away so far that it doesnt do anything. The second picture is the gearbox that it is out of. It meshes with the worm gear. The last two pictures are my cobbled together redneck engineered solution until I can find the right part. Hopefully it will work for a while. I dont have a lathe, so it's the best I could do with what I have on hand.

I have a Power gear parts document ; dated Feb. 03 , and can find only square cut gears listed in the parts , nothing spiral cut.

Here's a document on identifying Power gear motors ( the parts document is too large to post here in the forums.
Check the motor identification pdf to see if it's a Power Gear .

I hope you can find what you need. Sounds like you need to start getting educated on gears to learn exactly what need.How to measure. We had a huge book from Browning Co...Boston gear is another .I doubt the company had invent and engineered a new pitch .

Venture Manufacturing in Dayton Ohio, lists a right angle drive gear box with spiral cut gears , but they show pictures with a split aluminum gear case and don't list gears as available separately.

Klauber Machine and Gear Co. ( supplies gear drives to Newmar ) also no gear sets available.

What you have in hand is worm wheel. Start googeling worm gears . there are plastic guides for measuring pitch get a digital caliper. Some place has that gear even if you have to get it bored for shaft size.
A good industrial bearing supply may be able to help you.

You might try Colaw RV for the gear assembly. They specialize in RV Salvage. Web site is www.colawrv.com.

Not saying this is it but there is a CAD drawing i counted 20 teeth . cant tell bore. No set screw thats easy to correct. I guess there is a gear ratio even with same teeth count.

Probably 14.5 or 20 Pressure Angle. Typical ..we need a machinist to chime in. I don't see a template or gauge to put on worm to check.. hows your math look up formulas. I'm tired from night shifts and family obligations.

I'm still looking to find the correct gear, or even a new gearbox if that's what it takes. In the mean time I installed it with my homemade gear yesterday and tested it. It works for now. I dont know how long the gear will last, but I ran the slide out in and out a couple times and it didn't have any problems.

I can tell from your post that you're pretty well versed in these things.
Here's my 2 cents.

You are correct, the second pic is actually the worm gear that's in the casing. Take the chewed up bronze reduction gear in your hand to a machine shop and have them machine you a new one if all other options fails. I would consider having the new reduction gear that;s in you hand machined out of s/s not bronze like the OEM gear was. I would say probably around $150 or so. Go to a rural machine shop for tender care and good pricing. Bring the worm gear assembly with you so he can measure the pitch of the teeth for a perfect match. It looks like there was a dowel pin that connected that bronze gear on the shaft. Consider a set screw instead or a new dowel pin would work as well. Set Screw would just make things easier to deal with in the future if necessary. But a dowel pin maybe be necessary to withstand the torque when turning. If you go with a set screw make sure that the shaft is dimpled with a center punch to be sure set set screw sets properly. When you reassemble everything, put a dab of blue loctite on the new set screw on the new gear and then pack that whole cavity area with a good synthetic grease. If there are any better options a good machinist will offer options. Whether I explained this right or not doesn't matter. Take the two pieces to a good ol' boy machine shop and they get er done for ya. Finding individual gears like this online will probably be impossible. Maybe if you're lucky in a salvage yard. You can do this.
