Here's a new one....at least to me Re: Genny

As it pertains to things that can go wrong with an RV I thought I'd seen it all....until this morning!!!

I was driving from Nasvhille, TN to Buffalo, NY last night.....around 2am I pulled over in a Walmart to sleep for a few hours just outside of Cleveland....slept for a few hours, and then right around 530am....i woke up to a pulsing vibration, which I initially thought it was a motorcycle maybe rumbling by with big pipes, or maybe someone with their stereo thumping really loud (remember, I was dead asleep so I was trying to figure out/remember where I was as much as anything LOL.........after a minute or two it didn't stop so i decided to get up and take a look, looked out all the windows all around the coach and NOTHING, not a soul in sight....yet that vibration was still there...... after a "Noooo.....it couldn't be...." moment......I come to learn that it was my Generator i guess trying to START!! randomly on its own!! The starter was turning ever so slowly and that is what was causing the pulsing........I hit STOP on my starter switch, and it quit...but then after a few minutes it started doing it again........ so I went ahead and started it and let it run for a little bit hoping to work out whatever issue it was having.....I shut it off, and it hasn't done it since.

Any thoughts?? Short of a ghostly encounter with a spirit who clearly wanted the genny on, presumably so it could turn on the AC to cool things down a little inside the coach....I am completely perplexed!! LOL

Help!

My genny type is an Cummins ONAN QD 8500

Thanks!

I've had mine start up on its own several times. I checked the AGS and it was turned off. Unsolved mystery!

I'm assuming that you don't have auto gen start that was set and forgotten.

The Onan 7500 was known for phantom starts. It seemed to be related to moisture getting into the big connector in the wiring harness on the side of the big green box. The fix was to pull this plug apart and apply dielectric grease to the terminals and re attaching. Since yours is similar to the 7500, I'm guessing that may be your culprit.

Moisture gets into the start switch or its wiring and it starts on its own. Try a hair dryer on the remote switches to see if that helps.

The tougher question is why it merely tried to start but failed. Usually they crank right up and scare the bejeezus out of you.

Kind of wish mine would do that! The only way I can get the starter to turn over is using the switch on the gen itself. None of the interior switches, VMS nor autostart work!
