Getting ready for a weekend trip. While cecking the oil, I smelled something burning. It turned out to be a chassis battery smoking and hissing. The motorhome was connected to 30 Amp. outside of house. the RV is a 2004 DSDP and this is the original batteries. Could anyone give me a reason for this happening?

Charger overcharging or the battery has a bad cell or two or both. How was the water level? Was there crud on the top of the plates?

You probably will need new batteries and may need a new charger also.

One or more of the following...
1 - old/worn out batteries
2 - water level low
3 - overcharging

My '02 (on '03 coach) engine batteries fried themselves in 2005. My coach batteries did the same in late 2007. You are due!

You could here my coach batteries boiling on the shore power, checked the voltage, charger was putting out 24 volt dc to the batteries! Blew a couple of bulbs in the 12 volt lights. Replaced the converter charger, no more problem.

Batteries overheat due to high internal resistance, which often stems from a loss of electrolyte (water). There are a variety of reasons the battery could fail like that and 4 years is not a short life for a chassis battery. It could be your charger is overcharging, but I would not leap to that conclusion. Routine wear and tear or a crack in the battery case is probably a more likely answer.
