Fixed my '02 Newmar Mountain Aire-- aggravating, howling noise. It was the upper (main) grill. It howled from 45 miles per hour to 70 miles per hour, and it got worse depending on the wind angle. I welded 28 support stiffeners to the horizontal fins, sanded and repainted the grill. It's wonderful now. I've been chasing this miserable noise for a year now, since I bought it. I spent $2000 on mechanical issues, "experts" suggested I try. ie: New wheel bearings & transmission pump.
If any of you folks, including Bounders, have such a noise I suggest you do one of two things:
1. Wrap 8-10 small bungees (3/16" x 10") tightly around the 6, or so horizontal fins.
2. Remove the grill- there are only 7 #10 steet metal screws holding it in.
TEST DRIVE THE RIG
If this quites it down, you must add "stiffners" to the fins.
Suggestions are to cut some rubber blocks, or that hard packing material,found in newly shipped appliances and paint them flat black. Or weld/braze metal pieces (I used 3/16" round steel)-- this of course will require repainting the grill.
