Inverter Question
I,m,m looking to buy a inverter to power a flat panel TV and satellite box. Would a modified sin wave inverter work or do need a pure sin wave inverter?

Hi steve R,
It all depends. The best answer will be from the manufacturer. However, why take a chance? This is a long term purchase. Consider having Santa bring you the pure sine wave inverter of your choice. Get more than you need. You might want to power other things too.

There is no reason to believe that a MSW inverter would not work just fine. We have been using a 2000W Heart for many years without issue. With that said, if I had to replace our current inverter I would absolutely install a PSW inverter and I would recommend that you do the same thing.

What I tell people is this: IT depends.. it depends on basically 3 things, the inverter, the electronics it powers and the installation.
With MSW inverters there is a document "Things that might not work properly" and both Sat receivers and Televisions are on the list.
With ALL inverters "Devices drawing more power than the inverter can produce" is the last item on the list.
With True Sine Inverters it is the ONLY item on the list.
My advice.. Try it. if it works, GO-4-IT.
If the receiver has trouble acquiring the sat on Inverter, but not shore power, If the television acts "Wonkey" on inverter, but not shore power. Upgrade.
But keep the MSW.. You never know when it might come in handy.

My Cobra 800 Watt MSW inverter ($43 @Amazon) works great to power my 32" Samsung Flat screen and 211K Dish network Receiver. I bought a set of jumper cables and cut the ends off and crimped lugs (use oxider grease and heat shrink tubing from home depot electrical department) on them and ran them directly from the coach batteries to the passenger compartment. For safety, from Autozone, I put a 60 amp (car stero amplifier) fuse at the battery end. I could have used a 400 watt inverter, but I wasn't sure and now I can charge my laptop too.

We have used our Panasonic LCD TVs for 2 years and our DirecTV DVR for over 4 years on our Tripp-Lite inverter, but like wa8yxm says, it depends. Some devices work better than others, and some inverters work better than others. If I were buying a new inverter, I would probably buy true sine wave, but that's just me.

My Sony and Samsung LCD tvs work fine on our Xantrex RV2500 MSW inverter. So do the Sony home theater system, DirecTV box, etc. Only thing I have trouble with is the external speakers on the computer - they hum like crazy!
