That's tragic.

One more reason to be sure your CO detector is in working order as well as checking the genny exhaust.

How is it one careless match can start a forest fire but it takes a whole box to start a campfire?

Excellent reason not to sleep w/the gen running unless its needed for life support.

Well, Mike, I agree, except things aren't always that simple.

I have to have a cpap and can't stand silence while sleeping, so I run my box fan for noise. I know, silly sounding, but I cannot sleep without that background white noise.

Summer of 12 the power was out to the sticks & bricks so I and the pups went out and slept in the coach, overnight lows here in DFW in the muggy middle of summer are usually in the mid 80's with sweatingly high humidity, hence; A/C is a must to sleep. I ran the genny all night and believe you me, I was very aware of that CO, made sure my carbon monoxide detector was operable and a fresh battery. I was aware there was a slight breeze out of the south which helped dissipate, but of course, wind you cannot count on all night.

I was worried about it and do worry about it, and believe one of these would be a great investment for those that have to run a genny at night:

Gen-turi Generator Exhaust System - Camco 44461 - Automotive Accessories - Camping World

I feel awful for those folks, because that night, before I went to bed, I had a flash of a news headline "man and 4 dogs found dead in motorhome from carbon monoxide poisoning"

Seeing what happened with that exhaust leak is just a tragedy....

I hate to sound like a spoiler, however every year there are deaths at NASCAR/Race events, way to many generators running in close proximity.

The SCCA now mandates stacks for the generators because of all the RVs in close proximity in the paddock. Kind of heavy handed policy, but if you get a lot of 'em together I could see how it might help.

I suppose cracking a window at the opposite end of the coach from the gennie and running a vent fan might work well, especially if the gennie was at the front of the coach.

Doubt it had anything to do with a "leaky exhaust" but more with how many were running, proximity to others and wind direction...
Leaky exhaust was police way of absolving Nascar of blame for not having or not enforcing a "quiet time"

FWIW, a nearly new one is for sale at escapees.com. Last I looked it was $75, and in FL.

If the air is saturated with exhaust, open windows will allow it to enter, really only good solution is to avoid areas of high concentrations.

RV's who have generators SHOULD have a Gen Turi or don't run your generator. I have attempted to get Kansas Speedway to mandate it as our spot is only 20' wide and my neighbors generator exhaust is horrible on the outside of our coach and is lined up perfectly for our front door.

We shouldn't have to mandate it, but too many RV's are either unaware or don't care about themselves or their neighbors safety.

Very unfortunate.
