Kitchens, Counterspace, and Cooking
As we consider the move from fiver to Class A, one of the major shortcomings we see is the lack of counterspace in a motorhome. How do people that actually cook in their kitchens deal with this? My first though is to add a mobile island. Is that a feasible option? Other suggestions?

We have covers to go over the stove top so we do the prep work first and then start cooking. You really don’t need that much space. And like rk911 said you just make do.

One of the main reason we bought our 2005 Winnebago Voyage 38J was the abundance of counter space. I dont believe I have seen any newer motorhomes with this much counter space.
About 5:58 into the video.

We have a flip up counter on one side, a sink cover, and a stove cover. It also helps that the dining table is directly across from the sink. As RK911 says, you learn to make do with what you have.

We have one of those flip up extensions but it's a joke. It's really too little to do any good & ours opens into the entry step well area so if any cooking is being done outside as well as in, you can't go in/out the door until the extension is lowered.
Many of the newer coaches have pull out drawer sections that increase the counter space. Designs like Paul showed in his video seem to have the most space. They're scarce, but they're out there.
We can only use our coach for vacations & when I'm on vacation I don't cook. So that's how I solve the counter space issue.

We find the flip up extension in the step area quite handy. When cooking outside, we use it to pass things back and forth which saves the person inside having to stop what they are doing and also having someone climb in and out of the coach multiple times.
We stack the dishes to be washed on the extension and the washed dishes on an absorbent pad on the stove cover.

Granted you will not find this much counter in a short rig and there is another 30” when you pull the sliding cabinet out.

We went with https://www.containerstore.com/s/ori...1001568&q=cart because it looks nice and folds. I found that leaving off the wheels makes it just under my counter height so it is partially under the flip-up counter extension. Not only does it hold up the extension and keep it more stable but the slight down-pressure on the cart keeps it in place going down the road. Yes, I've come to find out that I can leave the cart up and in place at all times but that's due to my floorplan. The folding aspect seems like a perfect solution for you, AKNAVY.

Agree, the 2003 40' Fleetwood Revolution we used to own had 4' more counterspace than my current 45' coach. That's a huge difference. Perhaps the owners of a large coach just eat out.
We carry a folding 4' table to use as an island when needed.

I like the idea of a folding island/table to add counterspace. As the main cook in the household, the kitchen is important to me!

It does seem that even on bigger motorhomes, kitchens lose out on reasonable counter space! We cook outside over a fire or a grill (DH loves this...it's play for him ) a lot or just nuke everything (carry a lot of prepared meals), but I'd love more counter space. In the meantime, we make do with the dinette table for prep work. And we just make do

We agree. One of the features that sold us on our 08 Navigator was the large kitchen counter space and pull out island. We cook a lot so very nice to have.
When you are short on counter space I have seen people pull a top drawer out and put a cutting board over the open drawer to create more counter space.

Our 2004 Newmar MADP 4016 has 9.5 feet of 32" deep Corian counter space (about 24 square feet) with the sink and stove covers on, not including the small pull-out counter space. That was one of my "must haves" when looking for our coach.
