The newer chemicals without formaldehyde don't work as well as the old stuff. As to loosing potency while stored, I suppose it does. Hope not as I've got several gallons that I was given a couple years ago when a friend quit RV'ing.

Hardly got out last year and this year is looking even worse do to the DW's health.

Axles aren't falling off. That was my thread 3 weeks ago, but got that fixed. Years ago I had a thing called a Doggie Doolie. You can guess what it was for. Set in the ground and just added enzymes. That thing worked better than the septic in my house! Not familiar with the Calgon thing. Can someone enlighten me? Please?

Seldom have had odor issues with our mh. Bought a case of Thetford pint bottles at a garage sale 17 years ago and still have 70% of those. When an odor issue occurred we would add only about 1/8 of a cup and the smell would soon disappear. Seemed to only have the problem in very hot weather but not consistently.
The Thetford product, which must be similar, did its job the last time I used it about 18 months ago. I have had no shelf life issue that I can detect with this additive.

Calgon is used when doing the Geo method. Just do a search for geo method . If memory serves I think it was 2 cups calgon , 2 cups dishwasher soap in a gallon of water, pour in black tank that has been flushed and filled 1/3 with fresh water. Do this before travel so while driving the sloshing in the tank will clean the sensors while cleaning the tank . I have done this while heading home after being stationary for five months. We use the toilet as needed during the trip, and the last stop I dump and rinse till water runs clear.

Yep, still at Wal-Mart. Try doing a search I was going by memory, and not positive the recipe is exact.

B Dubya-

I use the GEO method to reduce the chance that solids will adhere to the sides of the black water tank, and thereby make the level sensors not work correctly. It's not a method to reduce smells.

Clean tanks and proper seals/vents are the key to not having smells. This post from "Old-Biscuit" is a great summary of where to look for causes of smells. The only thing I'd add to his list are air admittance valves and backflow preventer valves, often installed under the bathroom sinks.

Calgon and Geo method did not work for us. We use too little water. We use liquid Aqua Kem or Campa Kem from Walmart. Works very well when you use very little water.

Parents tried the GEO method in their Foretravel. Gave it up as too much trouble.
