Just received our renewal for our plate fee here in Michigan, and they want almost $700.00!!! I'm assuming it'll be possible to get a temporary plate every three months since our motorhome is in storage from mid October to mid March. Any suggestions? We plan on moving to Florida in 5 to 7 years - are plates there more reasonable?

The only suggestion I have it DON'T move to California!

We got our renewal for our 3 yr old Itasca and it was nearly $2000!!!

After selling our Nor Cal home in Sept, we became Escapee Texans. It cost me $250 which I think included a one time $90 out of state xfer fee.

I won't miss the California income tax either.

The plates in FL cost less than $100 per year. As long as you have owned the coach for more than 6 months then you don't pay any other fees. If you later trade that coach and want to register it in FL then you pay a 6% sales tax on the difference you paid and transfer the tags.

Wow!

My RV plate here in NC is only $10 for the registration, I give them another $30 for a vanity number for a total of $40. But to be fair, I have to pay a personal property tax to the county on the RV and that was an additional $146.

I don't envy your $700 in Michigan.

I do not know if they will grant you a temp plate or not over and over again, there are restrictions on temp plate use. Do remember this, that is not a registration fee like it used to be back when it was "Pay by the pound" It is a property tax. deductable on your income tax.

I too was shocked when I received my license renewal this year, my fee more than doubled. I did trade on new coach and supposedly our plates are now based on value. I called Sec. of State office for explanation and was assured the fee would go down in subsequent years, I forget the % the fellow quoted but they have a chart of values they go by year to year. Your fee sounds high in relation to mine which was in the area of $500 so you might want to check on the value they are assessing you for. Deductible or not, it is still tough to pay that kind of fee for part time use.

Hi Born2RV,
This is a very timely topic. I just renewed the coach tags today for two years. The cost was $234.80. This is not quite a inexpensive as Bill mentioned in his post, but one of the lowest in the country. Come on down to Florida (as a domicile) quickly and benefit from all Florida has to offer.

No other charges in FL. No annual personal property, etc. I am not trying to say FL is the best, but having come from VA where there was an annual personal property tax that was "x" percentage of the coach value, FL is a bargain.

born2rv, our plates run about the same, $680.00. we did the temp plate thing for a couple of yrs then started using it feb-april and finally broke down and started doing the yearly thing again. your right about the temp plates. we were paying $110.00 for three mo. you can renew as many times as you wish wich makes no sense 3x4 = $440.00 not $680.00 oh! well were stuck here for a couple of more yrs. jim

I have never seen anything in that area that applies to an RV.

I live in FL and never heard of a tangible property tax. My MH is on a Ford Gas Chassis and the tag renewal costs me a little over $50 a year. No property tax on MH or any property that is not real estate.. No income tax but state sales taxes can be anywhere from 6% to 13% depending where you live. The down side of that is the schools are laying off teachers and cities are laying off COPs and workers of all types and you do find a lot of user fees for all kinds of government services but I understand that is happening everywhere.
