Our '97 w/10k Onan diesel had 99 hours on it when we bought it last fall. It runs and performs perfectly. I think, if you run into something similar, it's cause for further investigation, not condemnation!

If maintenance logs show proper maintenance has been performed (even with no usage the oil should still be changed annually!), and a performance check reveals no issues, you're good to go! Is it normal, heck no. Am I going to turn my heels and walk the other way for this reason? NO WAY! Not without checking into it further...

Good question. The controlling factor should be the engine.
A diesel engine should be good for 5000 hours without an overhaul. A gas or propane engine should be good for 2000 hours without an overhaul.

As far as the electrical generator itself, it should be limitless. The end shaft bearing is the only wear item that should require maintenance.

Lots of good information posted here.

I don't really worry about "resale" value, but I do take care of the equipment with regular maintenance.

Saying that, I start our generator before starting the drive engine. The gen set runs throughout our entire trip until I turn it off to plug into shore power.

I'm pretty sure that my generator has over twice the hours of the drive engine. I ran it for about 2 weeks straight during Hurricane Ike.

Its only fuel injected if its a diesel. If its gas powered, it has a carb. As for the salesman, yes, that IS a good salesman, he's doing his job. The last carburetor replacement ( they no longer rebuild them) my dealership sent to Onan was near $700..run your gensets folks... you won't have the coach long enough to wear it out !
