Most states base the anual registration fee on weight and/or length, not on value.

Michigan motorhome (aka "trailer coach") fees are by weight class.

I do not have the current price chart but mine went UP from 380 to 45x over the last 2 years.

Michigan bases the registration fee on the value of the Unit when new from what I understand.. Not the purchase price but the sticker price.

Let me check on that. Yup it is MSRP Here is the language:

If the secretary of state's list has not been published for that vehicle by the time of the
application for registration, the base list price shall be the manufacturer's suggested retail price as shown on
the label required to be affixed to the vehicle under 15 USC 1232. If the manufacturer's suggested retail price
is unavailable, the application shall list the purchase price of the vehicle as defined in section 801.

Now there is an upside to this.. Since it is based on the value of the vehicle it is a TAX and thus a deduction on your income tax.. If they based it on LBS it would be a fee and non deductable.. Or so I'm told.

(DO check that out before claiming as a deduction).

Another data point: Kentucky license for my motorhome is based on value so the tax is reduced each year.

You would think a state with one of the best state parks, county parks and private RV parks in the country, surrounded by blue water would be more friendly to a specific sector in the RV industry? If you pull your RV then you can buy your plate for a one time fee. But if your RV has a motor and steering wheel then you most be one of life's lottery winners!! What our state bureaucrats fail to understand is many other states are MH friendly with much lower registration fees, and will allow out of state residence to register there motorhome in a different state then the one you live in! The next time your travel pure Michigan take note of the number of MH with out of state plates!!!

Michigan is a complete rip off when it comes to plating a motor home. Plate fees for the first 20 years are based on the original sales price!

And if that's not bad enough, you need proof of having some of the most expensive (if not THE most expensive) insurance in the US prior to buying those plates.

When our coach was Mich. based, the plates for our '97 HR were 550. or so, and insurance (including collision) was about 650 as were were not full timing/living in it.

After buying a home in FL we re-titled the motor home there. NOW, our plates are 59. (I'm looking at the renewal), and our insurance is about 450 for an agreed on value policy w/collision.

So, we are now plating AND insuring the MH for less than the price of the MI plates alone.

I don't mind paying the registration. It's far cheaper than the yearly "tax" I wok have to pay back in Ireland.

That's great to know folk think Michigan has great State parks, I really like them also.

For those of you who think Michigan is "A complete Rip Off"

Check out Clark County NV, In NV it varies county to county. I won't say more.
