Lifetime average on our 400ISL is 7.4mpg. Always towing two Jeeps over the years, but both are about 3750 pounds. Data is from ScanGauge over about 10,000 miles.
7.4mpg sounds like a popular number.

We have put around 11,000 miles on our ISL 400 with about 75% of it towing a Suburban.
Old school spreadsheet recording mileage, fuel, generator hours and towing miles.
7.66 MPG which includes generator and Hydrohot usage
8.33 MPG if I back out .46GPH on generator usage

8.5 MPG (averaged over 148k miles).
148,000, (miles driven), divided by 17,411, (gallons of diesel used) = 8.5 MPG.
(I usually travel at between 60 and 65 MPH).

I'd guess that in most cases I don't spend more than 15-20 minutes idling in association with a campground stop (combined idling upon arrival and idling in preparation for departure).
I'll have to do some googling and see if I can identify a "fuel burn @ idle" figure for my coach engine. .. and then noodle how to best separate gallons spent idling in order to calculate moving MPG. Currently, the MPG # I use when calculating fuel estimate is essentially an average of "cherry picked" trips where my calculated MPG (calculated the old fashioned way of Total Miles Drive / # of Gallons replaced) of the MPG observed on selected trips that I know didn't involve the use of the Aquahot and/or generator. Obviously this isn't an exact science.
Thanks for the suggestion! If/when I revise my calculator - I'll repost.

I have a DD 500 in this coach, and their tech support and manual say to idle as little as possible. Even trying to do that, some times it ends up being 30 minutes just checking in to a CG and getting settled. The DW goes inside to check in...sometimes it's three minutes, sometimes its 15 minutes (at some point, I do shut it down). At one of our regular CGs, it's probably half a mile to our space...all at an idle, all logged as idling. Some times, when backing into a space, I have to stop and cut down an offending limb or branch...still idling. My point in mentioning this is that when I started logging this information, it turned out to be much longer than I thought it would be.
Maybe you are getting better mileage than you thought.

That's helpful insight. Just curious, did the documentation for your engine provide any info on what the motor's fuel burn at idle is? If not, what are you using to estimate it?

maybe because i got rid of w/d which was a few hundred lbs, and replaced the big battery pack with one a fraction of that weight, i consider my overall weight is light; my average mpg is between 8.5 and 9. i observed the biggest factors to the fuel mileage are:
- fuel quality, ie, d2 vs biodiesel, about 2 mpg difference. when i stopped at a fuel station, if i saw a percentage of bio in it, unless my fuel was very low, i just took off for the next.
- tire pressure. my placard says 120 front and 110 rear minimum. i maintain it to 120-122 front and 115 rear.
- speed. 62 is the sweet spot on a flat road.

According to the information on the Aqua Hot web site ... our Model 400D will burn 1-4 gallons of diesel fuel per day. A Cummin (Onan) QD1000 generator burn .54 gallons per hour at half load - which means a typical 2 hour generator run burns a gallon of diesel.
If you simply divide total miles driven by the number of gallons you stuck in the tank - your results can be skewed pretty significantly. For the sake of discussion let's say you just got home from a 600 mile trip - and it took 75 gallons to refill the tank. The simple Miles/Gallons formula says you got 8 mpg during your trip.
However, it was a 3 day trip ... and you burned 3 gallons per day of diesel to run you Aqua hot (9 gallons for the trip) and ran your generator for two hours each day (1 gallon per day - 3 gallons for the trip) - that's 12 gallons that didn't go to the engine - meaning you actually travelled 600 miles on 63 gallons of fuel - and actually got 9.52 miles per gallon.
In this scenario using the simple Miles / Gallons formula understates your actual engine MPG by 16%. When you're talking MPG that's a pretty significant miss. Let that same 600 mile trip include a 6 day stay where you're burning fuel with the Aqua Hot and the Generator at the same daily rate - and the simple miles / gallon formula becomes more or less meaningless.
If you're trying to track engine MPG - you have to have a mechanism for adjusting for fuel used by your generator and your Aquahot in order to keep the numbers meaningful.

I agree completely! I just use the computer due to that reason, we avg. right at 8.0, and all of our trips are in the mountains. Regards

We get about 8.1. Since we recently had the ECM update the computer mileage has dropped in line with the calculated book mileage.
I include idle time with the mileage as that is part of the operation and should be included.

The owner's manual is very complicated and there is no fuel burn info in it. I called DD, he put me on hold for a while, and came back and said nobody knew what the fuel burn was at idle.
I had an 8.9L ISL 400 before the DD, Cummins knew exactly what fuel burn was for it: 600 rpm, .5 gph; 1,000 rpm, 1.0 gph and 1,200 rpm, 1.5 gph. Since my idle on the DD is about 700 rpm, and it is 100 hp and it is nearly 4.0L larger, I'm using 1.0 gph for fuel burn.

I have a 02 Winnebago Journey 32T bought new in 02. It has a 275 HP, 5.9 Cummins with a MS2000 Allison 5 speed. Over the 14 years and 202,000 miles, traveling all types of terrain, towing a 4,000 plus tow most of the time at 65 MPH, the overall MPG is between 8.9- 9.1.
Our average GVW is around 26,000-27,000.

Charles,
A very good friend of mine has owned an '01 32T since new. He has attempted to trade many times but just can't find anything that he likes as well. He also enjoys mileage in that range. The Cummins ISB is an economy champ.
