Mirror Adhesive question

I have Ventra heated, remote controlled side mirrors on my driftwood, had to remove them to get them un-stuck and moving again. Previous installer (I doubt oem install?) used silicone to stick the mirror to the backing. I have seen suggestions on this forum that silicone is not a good adhesive. Any suggestions for this application? thank you.

That's what ours are held on with (double-sided adhesive on thin foam). I used tape I had on hand to repair ours when one side came loose, and it has held up well for several years. However, I since found out there is a weatherproof variety available, which is what I would use if I had to do it again. I have seen the weatherproof type in Walmart, but I can't remember what department - automotive maybe?

Caution - if you go to tape, either clean off the silicone really well or put the tape in another area because the tape will probably not stick well to the area where the silicone was.

paz is right - the silicone oil remaining on the surface inhibits any other (OK, durn near any other) adhesive from bonding. I betcha a half hour spent scraping the surface with steel wool would help. If you are in an experimenting mood, try silicone RTV adhesive - I heard it will stick to a previously 'silicon-ed' surface. Maybe.
