My first (semi) major blunder
After returning from 5 days of repairing 3k worth of damage to a rental property in georgia, I'm backing into the lot where I'm semi-full timing while job has me 100 miles from home- I notice something wrong with the normal scenery. I get closer and see what used to be my fully extended and upright awning looking like an origami airplane. It's still attached at the top but looks like the housing is collapsed in the center. I only inspected it late last night but I think the arms may be salvageable. Any one else ever got a terrential downpour and forgot to stagger for runoff? Assuming I just need a new frame and installation, how many more green guys should I be preparing to part ways with? I'll get pics this evening

I'd suggest that, if you're going to be away for an extended period of time or under potential high wind/heavy rain conditions, retracting the awning would be a good idea. Having said that, I know that horse is already out of the barn in this case, but it's something to file away for future reference.....

I totally agree with Rusty...
I'd suggest that, if you're going to be away for an extended period of time or under potential high wind/heavy rain conditions, retracting the awning would be a good idea.

An extended period of time for me is about 10 minutes. We never leave it extended if we leave the CG

Ok. It is noted that I should keep it in when away. Any experience w/getting it replaced? Anyone? If its not terribly expensive I'd rather cash out than make a claim. The premium is already 2k a year

I lost an awning on my 5er due to a similar rainstorm. Insurance company covered it, and camping world did a great job one the replacement.
Look close at the hardware. Mine was cracked.

Make some calls to local rv outlets, Mom and pop servicing types.
If the fabric is good, then you may be able to replace with used parts.
Many replace whole when fabric is toast, the shop sometimes keeps old parts, place near hear has about 10 of various lengths, if too long it could be cut.
They may be able to install it.
Look up the local to the RV places and start calling, nothing to lose but your time

We do not venture far with the awning out. Too easy to roll it up vs. the cost of the damage it can cause.

You could probably get it replaced for less than a grand depending on how long it is. It's not too hard to replace with 2 setts of hands and a couple of ladders. The other thing is: check around for Insurance. We don't pay that much for ours a year.

Yep, happened to us in Fresno earlier this year. Cost the insurance co some $4,400 due to the paint damage when the arms scraped the sides. Since we were on the way to Phoenix we had to take it off and leave everything at our friends house.
Been Rv'ing since 1957 and it's the first and only awning I've ever lost.
Talked to others from around Fresno and they also had lost awnings.

Last time I a
had anawningproblem I looked up a local mobile awning guy, He was great, did a great job and fairly priced, you might try that option at least talk to one. Depends on what is wrong as to the price.
