An inverter changes DC power from your batteries to 120VAC power.
Do you have a transfer switch? That determines the power source, genset or shore power. Some are a manual switch some are automatic. Some MH's only have a receptacle on the genset to plug in the power cord; when you plug in to shore power you change your power cord from the genset receptacle to shore power receptacle. Do you have AC power from the genset?

You said in your first post that you can't find a service manual for your coach. I just Googled "Holiday Rambler 1986 service manual" and got quite a number of hits. I didn't do an exhaustive search but there seemed to be a lot of stuff out there. Also there was one post about owners of HR. That might get you connected to specific owners of the HR line of RV's who have had or are also searching for similar issues. Or they may already have literature or know where to get manuals.

Concerning this post. There are two different electrical devices on MH's. Inverters and converters. Most newer MH's have both but our 1977 and our 1999 MH didn't have both. Almost every coach will have a converter. That changes 120VAC into 12 VDC. When you are running the genny or plugged into shore power it charges the coach batteries, supplies 12 VDC to those items needing it and supplies 120VAC to those units that need 120VAC. The Inverter only converts 12VDC into 120VAC for just a few 120VAC items. Our coach has a 1,000 watt Inverter. We can run a kureg coffee pot and maybe a TV but that's about all. I doubt a coach from 1986 has an inverter unless the PO installed one.

If we ordered another coach I don't think we pay for an Inverter, but every coach absolutely needs a Converter.
