I've heard that the new 2007 diesel engine is significantly different from the 2008 engine regarding emissions. I know that the 2006 is significantly different from the 2007, but someone told me that the 2008 is different yet again. Does anyone know what's going on here or did I just hear the whole thing wrong?

Thanks,
RN

No, I don't believe that is correct. As far as emissions go the next round of new standards does not go into effect until 2010. The big 3 auto makers should have made most of their adjustments by the 07' model year.

Depends on what you heard. New diesel emissions standards went into effect Jan 1, 2007 and diesel engines manufactured after that date must comply, so yes a 2007 engine is different than a 2006. However, not all 2007 model year diesel motorhomes have 2007 engines.

There is also a phase-in of portions of the new EPA emissions rules (the NOx spec), so engines will continue to evolve through 2010. Here is a presentation from Cummins Technology about how engines will be changing over the next 3 years.

Cummins also has some new engines for 2008 and I believe they do use a different or improved emissions technology, so at least some 2008 engines will be different than 2007 in that regard. And you can expect that the 2007 emissions technology will be improved to provide better performance and fuel economy as the engineers get more experience with them and refine the designs or come up with better solutions.

Engines produced after 01/01/2007 are significantly different (from an emissions perspective) than those prior. I think the confusion with the "2008" engine comes about when discussing the particular model year of the coach. There have been a great number of 2007 model year coaches built on chassis which used 2006 diesels (subject to the older emissions standards). As manufacturers move to 2008 model year coaches, many will be built on 2007 chassis with 2007 engines. If you're shopping you need to look at the specific chassis/engine dates to know if you have a 2007 engine subject to the newer emissions standard, and which must be fueled only with ULSD.
