Question New Member, 1st RV Purchase Questions

I will retire in Feb of 2013 and would like travel with my wife. Most of our travel would be during the winter months to escape the cold here in Missouri. My wife can't walk much so we think a motor-home would be our best mode of travel.
We are looking at a National Tradewinds 7371 with 1 slide out, a Freightliner chassis, 300 hp Cat turbo engine with Allison 6 speed and 7.5 kW diesel gen. It has 84000 miles and appears to be in great condition. The dealer is asking $33,900.

During my younger years I was an electrical utility lineman and eventually became an electrical engineer. I have driven many large vehicles and worked around diesel engines. For me, the mileage is not bad if the RV was properly maintained. I know National is no longer in business and that is not a problem for me.

Can any members give me advice on what to look for in this model, what fuel mileage to expect, etc.

Thanks from a newbie!

Hello, and
Tires, tires, tires. Check the date codes , only Michelin says their's will go 10 years, others6 or 7. Adjust your offer if tires are near the end of there time. Another post has a check sheet , I'll find it and re-post.
What year is the coach?

Sorry, it's a 1998. I will edit my original post with the year.

Hi, welcome to the forum. I can't comment on the National but my guess is the CAT will get around 7.5 depending on what, if anything, you're pulling.

I have a 1999 but it was built in the fall of 1998.
The price is good and I agree check the date codes on the tires also does it have
the service records so you can see what was done and when?
If possible make sure the radiator and coolers are cleaned both inside and out.
If you can have it inspected by someone not connected with the dealer.
As to mileage I like most of the 1998/2000 owners get 9 to 10 miles per gallon.
That is if you keep your speed down to the 55 to 60 MPH range.
